Ioana Villatoro

Ioana Villatoro is a visual artist working primarily in oil paint. She was born in Romania and raised between New York City and Southern California, and currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After taking a decade-long break from her studio practice to raise a family, she returned to painting full time in 2017. Her work is characterized by expressive brushwork, saturated color, and an intuitive approach that emphasizes movement, atmosphere, and emotional resonance. Drawing inspiration from landscapes and natural forms, her paintings reflect a deep engagement with the materiality of paint and a personal connection to place.

Series Statement:

This collection explores sunflowers at different stages of their lives, less as botanical studies than as reflections on physicality, resilience, and impermanence. I’m drawn to the way they reach toward light, respond to wind, and eventually bend beneath the weight of their own blooms. There is something both vulnerable and enduring in this transformation, as though they are slowly surrendering their physical form while remaining somehow present. Their scale, movement, and shifting forms give them an expressive, almost otherworldly quality. In some paintings, they emerge from or hover above the landscape, becoming less rooted in place and more suspended between the physical and the ethereal. In others, their heavy blooms pull the stems downward, carrying a sense of gravity and surrender.
